When children are frustrated and can’t seem to get it right they need encouragement and sometimes a push to get them going in the right direction. This book set does just that with each story sending the message of HOPE. Focus: responsibilities, patience, perseverance, determination, positive attitude, sharing, and caring.
My path towards illustration began in first grade math class. I spent hours fixated on my teacher’s woolly cardigan, imagining the fibrous tufts into sublunary shapes: whale sharks, moon dust, neon octopus suckers. In retrospect, these early ventures into re-arranging reality serve to illuminate my clear decision to become an illustrator.
I feel hugely grateful to my family and friends, as well as my tutors and colleagues from the BA Studio Art course at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and the MA Children’s Book Illustration program at the Cambridge School of Art at ARU, who have helped me to become the person I am today (parrot squawks and all).
Gillian spends a lot of her time in a studio in the basement of her dad’s bicycle shop – drawing, painting, printing - and trying to drown out the sound of people testing bells upstairs. Having completed her Illustration degree at Falmouth in 2012, Gillian has returned home to South East London where she enjoys doing as much exploring and adventuring as is possible with an empty piggy bank (quite a lot, actually). She is still searching for the perfect den. This is her first picture book.
